5 Blog Photography Tips That Anyone Can Use

When it comes to blogging, photography is a huge part of the process for me. I love experimenting with different angles, props and backgrounds to find a set up that's right for me. I get quite a lot of questions regarding how I create my flatlays, so today I thought I would compile a list of my top photography tips that anyone can use.

A Good Set Up | One of the main aspects of photography I like to consider when blogging is making sure that any similar photographs are spaced out over a few weeks. The biggest tip and "photography hack" I have is setting up an image with the perfect blog props and background, adding your beauty products and then swapping them out for a different set of products with a few setup alterations. This means that you can create a variety of blog snaps in a short period of time that, when set out over the month, no one will know that they were taken on the same day with an almost identical set up.

Pick A Colour Scheme | Of course it goes without saying that there are no rules when it comes to blog photography, but when I'm in a rut I like to collect all the products with the same colour palette to photograph. Whether they're monochrome, all green or gold, a colour scheme can help you focus on the photo you're trying to take, helping you pick complimentary props and even give you ideas to match. For example Rose Gold Favourites and Monochrome Must Haves.

A Fail Safe Background | You've probably noticed that most of my photographs have been on a marble background recently. This was done deliberately, not just because it's aesthetically pleasing, but because I find marble backgrounds easier to edit. Coloured backgrounds like card or a pink blanket can work well too as you're not thriving for the perfect white, shadow free background.

Cloudy Days Are Your Friend | I know that cloudy days aren't popular amongst bloggers as the majority prefer sunny, blue skies, but hear me out on this one. Taking photographs on cloudy, white days can work in your favour as the clouds work as a giant soft box helping to minimise shadows, so photographs can be easier to edit afterwards. I find that I have to battle less with colour correction and, with the brightening curves tool on Photoshop, I've got a blog ready photograph in a matter of minutes.

When In Doubt, Fill The Space | I could go on and on about my love for blog props, but I'll be here all day, so I'll keep it short and sweet. When working with makeup, I like to keep the photograph busy, especially when playing around with temperamental lighting and shadows because blankets, candles and flowers can all help to disguise a multitude of sins. Don't get me wrong, I love a good blank space at times, especially when I want one particular product to stand out. However, when working with makeup I love to use complimentary ornaments, eyelash curlers and makeup bags to help frame the photograph.
